"Nobleman that flings javelins from an atlatl. Good against cavalry and Coyote Runners." ― In-game discription.

Overview[]

The Eagle Runner Knight is an Aztecs running fighter armed with the atlatl spear-thrower to sling pointed javelins and harass the enemy. It's fast, fires fast and has Dragoon's bonuses to counter heavy cavalry and, ironically, the Aztec own Coyote Runner. This is no surprise based on the fact that the Eagle Runner functions as a Dragoon on legs to follow the infantry-only Aztecs rule.

Actually, they might be better off flanking heavy infantry: they outspeed most of it so they can run away before being even touched by pikes or bayonets, they have ranged resistance against Line Infantry heavy fire, they lack the usual 0.75 malus Dragoon-like units have and infantry units have generally less hitpoints than cavalry units. This is, of course, up to player playstyle.

Their big button muster comes from Cinteotl Worship at the Farm with 1 eagle Runner for every 2 minutes of play and up to 30 minutes, like Macehualtins.

Trivia[]

History[]

Aztec warriors who had captured at least four enemy soldiers became eligible for the ranks of the eagle runner knight or the jaguar prowl knights. Presumably, this emphasis on capturing enemies was to collect a pool of captives for sacrifice, but the Aztec were also known for dealing death in battle, killing with single strokes of their obsidian swords, or hurling barbed spears with atlatls. Their own warriors who caused confusion or disorder in ranks were beaten on the spot and sometimes killed. The dress of eagle runner knights incorporated feathers and a helmet resembling an eagle's head. The eagle was a symbol of the sun, the focus of Aztec worship and sacrifice. Eagle runner knights are usually depicted carrying shields and spears.
