The Nation States are one of the new cultures to appear in Age of Empires III: Wars of Liberty. They consist of Balkanic and Eastern European nations and, despite being in the same continent as the Europeans, the Nation States were designed to offer a different gameplay experience.

Factions[]

Overview[]

Despite different game styles, the Nation States are still part of Europe and, as such, share several aspects with them. Their shared units are, for the most part, a counterpart of the European units. Their shared infantry units are archaic, and cannot be upgraded after Age III, reducing their late game potential. Their shared Cavalry and Artillery units are very similar to their European versions, with the latter being available earlier at Age II.
Unlike other cultures, the late-game economy of the Nation States doesn't use Mills and Plantations. Instead, their food and coin gatherings come from Crops (Wheat and Strawberries), which are cheaper but need to be massed to be effective.
Instead of upgrading their units individually, like the Europeans or Latin Americans, their entire infantry, cavalry and artillery are each upgraded at once with a single research at the Barracks, Stable and Artillery Foundry respectively. The cost of the upgrades are higher than they would be for individual upgrades, but come out cheaper if compared to all individual upgrade's costs together.

Features[]

  • Economic Upgrades: Just like other cultures, the Nation States have access to the Market and their own version of the Livestock Pen, the Hunter's Lodge which can train Geese, as well as the corresponding resource-gathering upgrades, which cost half of the value of normal European counterparts. However, after researching a improvement from those buildings, instead of having the next research appear in its place, the Nation States can only access them through a level system. Level upgrades needs to be researched in order for the next Market/Hunter's Lodge improvements to become available. In addition to unlocking the next set of improvements, level upgrades at the Market provide XP, and the one at the Hunter's Lodge increases the hit points, ranged attack and line of sight of Peasants. The Market has 4 levels of improvements with 3 level upgrades, and the Hunter's Lodge 2 levels with 1 level upgrade. The Market provides upgrades for crop, woodcutting and mining. The Hunter's Lodge offers food gathering upgrades for huntables and herdables, and line of sight upgrades for units and buildings.
  • Crops: Instead of Mills and Plantations, the Nation States' late game sources of food and coin are Crops. Once built, Peasants can be assigned to a Crop to harvest it and collect Food (Wheat) or Coin (Strawberries).
  • Navy: The Nation States have access to the Frigate and Monitor, while the Caravel is replaced with the Chayka for the same build limit and hitpoints, but with a stronger cannon attack, much greater range and the inability to fish or use the Carronade attack. The Greeks also have access to a unique ship, the Pyrpolikon, which continuously shoots fire at a short range and can train Sailors. However, the Nation States have fewer upgrades for their offensive navy compared to Europeans or Anglos, making them weaker in the late game. On the other hand, they have three upgrades for Food and Coin gathering from fish and whales instead of two, making them good at water booming. The Greeks automatically create Fishing Boats at their Dock which can build Fish Traps, a water building similar to a Mill that provide an infinite resource of food for Fishing Boats.
  • Star Fort: Instead of building regular Forts, the Nation States have access to the Star Fort, which can also train units and has more hit points but a weaker attack.
  • Aging-up: Instead of choosing between politicians at the Town Center, the Nation States research the Age-up technology by selecting a politician in one of their other buildings: Casern, Stable, Hunter's Lodge, Market and Artillery Foundry. This allows them to keep producing Peasants while aging and grants the unusual bonus of having all military buildings enabled in Age I. The Greeks can additionally Age-up at their Dock.

Shared Units[]

  • Chief: Their Explorer is the Chief. They have a lower hitpoints and lack the one-shot abilities of most other Explorers. However, they transform into a National Hero Statue which boosts the attack speed of nearby units when they die.
  • Scytheman: a Partisan-like unit with an area attack.
  • Hajduk: a Volunteer-like unit with better multiplier.
  • Marauder: Scout Cavalry unit that sacrifices hitpoints for damage.
  • Carabinier: Ranged Cavalry that shoots twice in quick succession before reloading.
  • Honor Guard: Assault cavalry with both ranged and melee armor.
  • Mule Artillery: Slow-moving, low-cost artillery. Good against infantry.
  • Mountain Artillery: French design Artillery piece. Good versus buildings and other artillery.
  • Schwarzlose: Machine gunner with a large rate of fire. Good all around.
  • Tower House: The Nation States' equivalent of the Outpost, a tower which also provides population and unit upgrades starting from Capital Age.
