"Get two types of villagers, the Merchant and the Architect. Unique units have greater range but underperforming melee. Better Religion and Spies. National Guards: Piccioto Partisan and Sardegna Bombardiere Grenadier." ― In-game description.

Overview

The Italians are a European civilization in Wars of Liberty, they were introduced in The Mediterranean Update (1.0.9). In Wars of Liberty, the Italians are a newborn nation; even though their national identity was formed centuries ago, they managed to gain their full autonomy only lately.
They are people of religion and art, but equally skilled on the battlefield, with paramilitary troops that are used to intrigue and dirty games.

Trivia

  • Italy was planned as a civilization for the base game Age of Empires III alongside Sweden, but both were cut and did not make it into the game; eventually both were made playable in Wars of Liberty. Most of the original Italian design focused on medieval units, while Wars of Liberty modernizes their roster for the mod's timeline (1789-1914). But Much Like Sweden It Was Used In Definitive Edition
  • Italy's Drama card used to be an Age IV card that was based on your number of Merchants, allowing you to cripple the economy of an unsuspecting opponent if you had high Merchant population. The card was later changed to Age I and Architects instead of Merchants, severely decreasing its potential strength.
  • Although the Villager voicelines were borrowed from the Napoleonic Era mod, most units use voice lines taken from the game Napoleon: Total War
